High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope is an analytical tool that is used to produce images of micro- and nano-sized samples and allows for higher magnifications in the order of 1,000,000 times and resolutions below 1 nm. An electron beam emits electrons that are focused by electromagnetic lenses and transmitted through the sample within a high vacuum and the transmitted electrons are collected from below by a camera. The portions where electrons do not pass through are dark and where electrons are scattered, the image is bright. The different shades of grey in the image indicate the way the electrons get transmitted and scattered.
