We will be talking about the effective communication of scientific findings, and how to turn the results of research into commercially viable technologies.
The workshop features a guest lecture by Dr. Adam S. Wilkins, geneticist, author and editor, titled “The Importance of Technical Writing in Communicating Science”. Dr. Wilkins is a geneticist, an editor and author specializing in teaching good writing practices in the natural sciences. The author of ‘Making Faces’ and ‘The Evolution of Developmental Pathways’, he has taught scientific writing for 12 years and has over 34 years of experience doing editorial work.
Organization of the Workshop:
3. 00 PM- 3.15 PM: An Introduction to BrainAura.

3.30 PM- 4.15 PM: Guest lecture: The Importance of Technical Writing in Communicating Science – Dr. Adam S. Wilkins.
– An overview of the importance of scientific writing, characteristics of good writing, common pitfalls and how to tell a compelling story so as to get the point across. Targeted at doctoral students/ post-doctoral researchers who want to improve their writing skills

The different types of scientific writing – specific characteristics and objectives.
Clear, concise and goal-oriented guidelines on organizing research and review articles.
Communicating scientific information in clear, interesting and memorable ways to different audiences.
Understanding and appreciating the importance of language, tense, and tone in scientific writing pieces.

An overview of the different routes of commercializing science and their respective advantages.
The concept of an academic entrepreneur.
An introduction to patents.
Applying for a patent in an academic environment – important considerations and pitfalls to avoid.
Case studies and discussion.
